Brazilian social activist Caio Ferraz is greeted by area children in the Vigário Geral slum in Rio de Janeiro. Ferraz, himself the only resident of the slum to graduate from a state university, opened the Casa da Paz social center in a building where eight residents were killed in a 1993 massacre. A total of 21 were allegedly killed by off-duty police officers. The center now provides job training and medical care to residents of Rio's most dangerous favela, but Ferraz is in exile in the United States after threats on his life.
