Pantanal Mato Grossense

As their mother washes clothes in the river, two young boys play around a floating dock on the Rio Negro in Brazil’s Pantanal — the world’s largest wetland. Ecosystems and ways of life could be threatened there by a plan to dredge the Rio Paraguay to allow shipping access to land-locked Paraguay and Bolivia. Critics of the plan charge that dredging will alter the seasonal flooding patterns of the Kansas-sized wetland.
