An Apache woman named Bear walks through the ruins of a Juamno Indian pueblo in eastern New Mexico. Up to 800 persons died at the hands of Spanish troops there in the year 1600 after they resisted Spanish requests for grain and blankets. 1998 marks the 400th anniversary of the Spanish colonization of New Mexico, an event being greeted with controversy. The ruins of the Jumano pueblo, abandoned in the 1700's, now form the Gran Quivira unit of Salinas National Monument.
