Cyclist Robert Armstrong, of San Antonio, Texas, climbs the 1000-foot Mokee Dugway pass up Cedar Mesa near Mexiacn Hat, Utah, July 1, 2010. The road, cut by uranium miners a half century ago, was the ispiration for Edward Abbey's Monkey Wrench Gang. The Red Rock Canyons Tour, organized by Lizard Head Cycling Tours, wound through 400 miles of the desert southwest. The route traveled through canyons and national monuments in Colorado, Utah and Arizona, ending at Lake Powell. (Kevin Moloney for the New York Times)
