DNC Curtain Raiser COPS

Visitors to Denvers popular 16th Street Mall commercial area found themselves surrounded by multiple groups of police from Denver and surrounding cities, some in riot gear, despite a clam night before the Democratic National Convention. Denver's police are showing a strong presence for the event, at which they expect trouble from protesters. Many passers by expressed disbelief at the number of visible officers and the size of their groups. Denver is scrambling to welcome an estimated 50,000 delegates, volunteers, protesters and others to the convention this week. (Kevin Moloney for the New York Times)
